Castle Setting
Castle Setting
This is new, isn’t it?
Yep, welcome to our brand new Masterclasses! Top-class content delivered by the experts, designed with people of your skill level in mind. Yes, you! We understand that not everyone through our doors is a professional jeweller, so our Masterclass weekends are tailored specifically for everyone and anyone. Yes, you will have needed to have completed a few classes to a certain level, but don’t feel like these are not for you, because they ARE! If you are unsure about booking, just get in touch and we can let you know.
Tell me about it
So, you’ve ticked some boxes and now you want to add MORE the set. Of course you do! Welcome to the next level of our stone setting classes! But don’t be put off by stepping up, you’ve done it before and you’ll do it again! If you’ve had a go at pavé, there’s no reason why you can’t progress here.
Yes, it’s a bit more fiddly, but man it is so rewarding! Nothing beats that feeling of success after all that time and preparation. And the good thing is you’ll be taught these styles by a true Master Goldsmith and Setter, who will lead you through everything step by step until you fully understand what’s involved and are confident enough to get going!
Can I do this class?
Please note that you need to have a good understanding of jewellery making. Knowledge of pretty much all bench techniques is required here. You’ll definitely need good pendant motor control and be used to drilling and burring. This weekend is probably for jewellers who have already completed our Intermediate Stone Setting [flush and pavé] or equivalent. If you have any questions or want to know where your current skills lie, please don’t hesitate to ask!
What happens?
We spend the day exploring the advanced technique of castle setting, where we slow things down a little and simply take our time. Why? Because this style needs deadly accuracy! If we veer off while drilling/burring one of the seats, it could make things go very wrong. We need patience and we need to be deliberate. But it’s this calm, meticulous removal of metal that makes it such a fun and rewarding technique to learn.
It doesn’t look like much written down on any instructions or notes, but there is a whole heap of work that goes into the preparation of this style before you even get near setting the stones. I hope you like drilling and burring, as we spend a great deal of time accurately removing metal to get these stones not only where they need to be, but securely set too!
Do I need to bring anything?
Bring a sketchbook or similar for taking notes. Please note that glasses/optivisors are mandatory for this class [get in touch if you’re unsure]. Please wear long hair tied up [or bring something to do so], don’t wear open-toed shoes and keep loose-fitting clothing to a minimum.
We will provide all materials, which include metal and stones. You will each have your own bench where we have access to all of our essential stone setting tools but do feel free to bring your own if you are more comfortable.
